What is orthopaedic surgery?

 Orthopaedic surgery is used to treat injuries and conditions affecting your pet’s bones and joints. Our experienced veterinarians perform a range of orthopaedic procedures, including fracture repair, surgery for luxating patellae and treatment of ruptured cruciate ligaments.

At our Yarrambat hospital, we can perform TPLO surgery for suitable dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease. TPLO is a commonly used surgical technique designed to stabilise the knee and help restore comfortable function.

On the day of surgery

One of our surgical nursing team members will go through a list of questions then your pet will be admitted into our surgical ward. A vet will perform a pre-anaesthetic exam, and your pet will receive appropriate sedation and pain relief.

During the procedure, your pet will be under general anaesthesia and closely monitored by our veterinary and nursing team. Heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, temperature and other important parameters are monitored throughout surgery and recovery.

After surgery

In most cases pets are able to return home once they are awake, comfortable and able to walk safely. Some patients may need to remain in hospital for further monitoring, depending on the procedure and their recovery. Before your pet goes home, we will provide detailed instructions regarding pain relief, exercise restriction, wound care and follow-up appointments.
